I think ti would be a helpful feature for people who don’t have steady hands if you could snap a photo rather than hold it in place. Unless you CAN do that already… in which case, ignore me.

I can see Google offering a better version of this for Android very soon. They will do it either by buying QuestVisual or just starting from scratch.

@Drummertist v.3: That’s what does it for me too. How that’s done, I have no clue, but it’s probably also the reason why it can only do word-by-word translations.

@TactakillChewy: 3Gs is jumpy and switches words so fast I can’t figure out what the translation is.
But it is a great idea and hopefully will get better.

@Mark 2000: but they’re also some of the more difficult to actually translate. I mean, sentence structure is roughly the same between latin languages, but now throw in the backwards manner of Japanese and it becomes much more difficult to do correctly.

I’d say non-latin languages should be high on the list. Those are the hardest to look up in a phrase book.

It seems like the bulk of the work is done, and having it work with other romance languages should be quick and easy to set up, especially Portuguese.

Absolutely amazing how it even mimics the typographical layout and visual style of whatever it’s translating.
That’s the most exciting part for me. It doesn’t take it out of context.

When I saw the video for this on Engadget, I thought for sure it was just a spruced up presentation – an exaggeration of what it could do. I didn’t realize it did all of this in real time. Pretty awesome.

Interesting I guess, but need a lot more languages. I would like to see Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, etc. Some things that are more foreign.

I downloaded it and played with it last night and you really have to hold it perfectly still for it to work right.
I think with a little more work this can be an amazing app. Would have helped a lot with my last trip to Mexico.
