I merely wanted to point out the recent episode of the televsion series Community involving night school featuring Kevin Corrigan A.k.a Rocky the Goon. Nice to see Giz was already on it.

@cranialvolume: Lots of older, even retirement age adults continue their education.
Many companies offer tuition assistance to their employees and often people wait until they are nearing a management position to take advantage.
Also in many states, retirees get discounts for continuing their education, especially at state-run schools.

Help. I am feeling induced!

semi unrelated. the black strip on the back of your ID? vhs tape.

A little considerations for buying tickets from nonprofits who rely on meager ticket (or sometimes expensive ticket) income is welcome, especially in a crap economy. Dishonesty, in general, sucks.

Or just keep going to school. Learn you some learnin’, ya scamps.
I like the word “little” for things. It’s a little dishonest. You’re sort of under arrest. You may be executed just a bit.

I graduated this past May, but my ID says that it doesn’t expire until 2014, so I shall have no compunctions using it at least until that time.
At that time, however, I’ll probably just give the discount up. Most of them aren’t more than a few dollars, which is definitely nice, but not worth the hassle of going through the process of faking an ID.

My school ID doesn’t have a date on it. Im sure I can use it for awhile till my picture looks too young for me.

Alot of online discounts will work as long as you provide a .edu address, and some schools offer perpetual e-mail forwarding or an @alumni.yourschool.edu address after you graduate. That means you can enjoy student promotions (such as Amazon Prime Student) long after graduation.

A “little dishonest”?
Sorry, you’re either honest or your not; period. Your efforts to cast dishonesty in a better light only serve to make you look like a douche.

And, the most important part of this? Most people DON’T CARE if your student id is ACTUALLY valid.
I use my University of Hawaii student ID all the time – in Colorado.
Not one person has questioned it, because they’re doing the same thing.

My (now-alma mater) university issues IDs with no stickers or expiration dates. Nobody has ever questioned its current validity. I plan to keep using it so long as I look vaguely like the photo or until I’m not poor.
I have $80,000 in law school debt, so I don’t feel the least bit bad about saving a few dollars at the movies.

Great, another “moral gray area” to wade into. The more people who abuse discounts the less discounts there will be for those who do need them.
In many states, forging a student ID is a felony. Getting caught using one is yet another felony. If the retailer catches you, and wants to make an example out of you, then was the discount equal to your legal bills and possible fines?
There are so many other ways to save, that encouraging felonious activity seems a bit silly.

@Rod K.: I was just never aware of student discounts. I always heard that Apple had them but I never wanted to buy anything from the Apple Store. Guess I need to look more into these discounts…

I am about to finish a master’s degree. Unfortunately, my institution has the expiration date printed in large text along the front of the card. The plus side is, they give all cards for 4 years, so I still have time to use it.
Of course, I still have my undergrad card, and that has no date on it at all. I can use it as long as I want.
I find that student discounts are pretty lax business. I have never had someone actually inspect my ID, and I have never been asked for something like a schedule (except for insurance coverage, but faking that is a little too much fraud for me).

Here in Brazil they charge half price in cinema and shows for students.
Since everybody here has a fake student card, every company has doubled it’s price.
So, at the end, only some people are punished to pay the full price because they don’t look like students.

Student discounts are good but won’t this method just make everyone think that you are stupid? I mean, a guy that looks like an adult and is a student? That just makes you look like a weirdo.
But I guess getting stuff cheap is worth looking like a weirdo, unless you meet someone you know.
cranialvolume
@SanjiX: There’s usually a 10% student discount for pretty much everything, including phone services and internet services. It’s not much, but hey, why not?
Rod K.
I’ve been forging those stickers for years now. I actually began while still an undergrad to get into dorms in which I did not reside.

i think as long as you are still paying the student loans, you shouldbe able to get the student discount. (to pay your loans off faster)

Wasn’t evil week back in October?

I still use my student ID when I can get a discount. I just graduated, so I don’t feel that bad, but I don’t imagine I’ll be able to keep it up forever. Eventually I’ll be too old and refused a discount, which will be embarrassing for everyone involved

Ha, when I got my MacBook last march, the guy asked if I was a student. I made something up on the spot, said I was last semester taking random classes and the JC for fun and he gave me the $100 off. I’m 29, finished school years ago. Don’t mind taking advantage of this though!
sdotbailey2
@musiqrulez: they also don’t have stickers, unless you are using public transit
musiqrulez
I work at a university, my ID says faculty/staff (I’m actually a staff member), and I routinely flash my ID card (which looks the same as the student ID’s) with no issue, but I try and cover up the part where it says faculty/staff.
Do I feel bad about it? Nope!
musiqrulez
I only got two semesters left at my community college and I never used it for any discount except for the year of Amazon Prime, but all that required was a student e-mail.
Come to think of it… I’ve never been asked for my student ID once and I haven’t updated the sticker in probably a year and a half.
