Honda UNI-CUB Personal Mobility Device

Technology has made life more convenient for people. Technology provides convenience and efficiency it almost all aspects of life. And it seems that technology might also someday make people become more complacent in terms of going to and fro. With the recently unveiled Honda UNI-CUB Personal Mobility Device, even a simple activity like walking might be improved by technology.

Honda has recently introduced its UNI-CUB Personal Mobility Device which will also be undergoing joint trials. You can consider it as a modern wheelchair designed for everyone. It features a driving wheel mechanism that can be directed in all directions via Honda’s Omni Traction Drive System. It is also designed in a compact size that comfortably fits in between the legs, much like a motorized stool. Mobility is controlled by the feet. It runs on lithium ion batteries and with a range of 6km running at a speed of 6km/h

The Honda UNI-CUB is designed for use in spaces indoors such as offices or homes. It can help make people ride going to the next room or the office pantry instead of just walking. Whether the concept might take off is still anyone’s guess. But for now, Honda is conducting trials and testing for the Honda UNI-CUB Personal Mobility Device to determine its possible uses in different facilities and environments. For those who want it now, you might have to wait a little bit longer.

Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson to stand down after faking computer science degree

By Daily Mail Reporter

|

Yahoo Inc Chief Executive Scott Thompson is stepping down from his role at the Silicon Valley internet giant.

It is thought to be the final stage in a controversy over a fake computer science college degree on his biography, although the company if expected to claim he is leaving for ‘personal reasons’.

Thompson will reportedly cite a recently discovered illness as the main cause for his departure, less than six months after he took the role in January.

Thompson’s interim replacement, effective immediately, will be Yahoo’s global media head Ross Levinsohn, a source told Reuters.

Prior to the posting he was president of PayPal, the Jose-based eBay subsidiary, taking over from Carol Bartz who was dismissed in September.

Yahoo has said that Thompson did not have a computer science degree, despite what was stated in his official company biography and in regulatory filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Levinsohn most recently also ran its Americas unit, including its advertising sales.

The move is a victory for hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb of Third Point LLC, which is Yahoo’s largest outside shareholder and brought the discrepancy in Thompson’s educational background to light.

It was Loeb and Daniel Levinsohn, head of Third Point, which owns 5.8 per cent of the company, who discovered Thompson’s misstep and told the world of his phoney degree claim.

Loeb has been waging a bitter proxy battle to install a slate of four directors on the Internet company’s board, which he has accused of being dismissive of investors’ input and in need of restructuring capabilities and media strategies.

According to the AllThingsD blog, which reported Thompson’s departure earlier on Sunday, Yahoo’s board is closing in on a settlement with Loeb that will give Third Point three board seats.

The blog said Yahoo’s recently added director Fred Amoroso will be named chairman of the board.

Yahoo was not immediately available for comment.

Emails sent to Thompson’s official Yahoo email address were already bouncing back on Sunday morning.

Yahoo is in the midst of trying to revive revenue growth and its popularity with consumers, facing fierce competition from Google, Facebook and other online companies.

Japanese enthusiasts make sci-fi staple ‘mecha’ robot a reality – and they plan to sell them with weapons (well, water pistols)

By Eddie Wrenn

|

Ellen Ripley famously wore one to protect a little girl in Aliens. Video games fans may have guided Solid Snake in his battle to stop a nuclear version in Metal Gear Solid.

But now that long staple of science fiction, the mecha suit, is fast becoming a reality.

The enthusiasts who built this model hope to start selling it – with optional water pistols and mops – once they get all the kinks (perhaps a penchant for destruction) worked out.

A mecha is basically a tall, strong robot, but instead of a robotic brain inside its head, it is powered by the lowly human tucked away inside.

When the human walks, the mecha walks. When the human lifts, the mecha lends its super-strong metallic arms to the task.

But the mecha here, named Vaudeville, is not the work of a high-powered robotics lab, or a model built for a construction firm or space company – it is instead the dedicated work of a group of hobbyiests, bringing their childhood movie-based dreams to life.

And if the Suidobashi Heavy Industry, as the group of enthusiasts call themselves, they get this first model up and running, they hope to sell mechas to the world at large – with optional water-pistols.

The clever 4,500kg project uses off-the-shelf hardware and software to make the mecha powerful.

Sitting in the pilot’s chair, an Xbox Kinect motion-tracking system tracks the head and body movements to make sure the mecha follows the human moves, and a smartphone to interpret movements and send commands to the mecha’s muscles.

Mechas are popular because they assist humans, helping us lift heavy objects as if they were light-weight, and – in the world of sci-fi at least – they are usually armed with weapons to help in space or planetary warfare.

The brains for the mech include a smartphone, master-slave handle bars (for the arms), and a Microsoft Kinect sensor, allowing the pilot to rotate the cockpit

This mecha may not have a nuclear weapon, and it may not have fought aliens in space, but it does have the advantage of being real

Once this mecha has been tweaked and perfected, future models may be offered for sale, with customised paintjobs.

The makers also suggest accessories such as a water-pistol so mecha can be a fireman, or a mop to help with the cleaning.
