Set Up VoIP Calling on Android 2.3 Gingerbread [Video]

SIP voice-over-internet calling is one of the quiet new features of Android 2.3 a.k.a. “Gingerbread”. Without any third-party apps, you can set up any SIP-compatible phone service to make calls over your data network. This video shows the steps, and now we’re intrigued as to whether a free SIP client, like the SIPGate we used in our Google Voice setup, works in Android as well. We’ll try it out, but have you already given it a go? Tell us in the comments. [via Android and Me] More »

@Java-Princess: Did you read the title? It says “Set Up VoIP Calling on Android 2.3 Gingerbread’. Unless you have gingerbread on it……

@tylerstyle: Do so! I posted on tips about it yesterday. I was actually implying Verizon had removed it.
Java-Princess
@Java-Princess: It’s probably because you don’t have Android Version 2.3 running on that Droid of yours.
It’s a new feature from Gingerbread.

@piercedgeek: Verizon. What is most frustrating is that when I first hear the notification in Gmail, I can quickly pull out my phone and hover my thumb over the Answer button, but then I just have to sit and wait for it to ring. While it is only a few seconds, it feels really frustrating.

@salviati: I’m curious, what cell provider do you use? I’m on t-mobile, and while I have seen a little delay between gmail and phone ring, it was never more than 3 or 4 seconds at the most.

GV is not available in Canada yet, but GMail calls are. Is there a way to make VoIP calls from a N1 coming out from the Great Big Canadian White

Well, I just watched the video and tried it on my Droid X – I already have a Gizmo5 number from before google bought them – unfortunately the Droid X doesn’t have the internet call settings menu option so I didn’t get very far.

The part that intimidates me with setting up an integrated sip/VOIP/Google Voice solution is how complicated the SIP portion of it is. I’ve seen the tutorials but they look like a PITA, especially trying to find a provider that’s reliable and cheap/free. Last year there were only one or two SIP providers, and one of them, it was difficult to get an account (I forgot the details. Edit: Found it, it was Gizmo5 which is closed off after being bought by Google).
Anyway, can anyone recommend a SIP provider that I can just use? It would save me the hassle of doing research. Is SIPGate recommended?

@redtheguy: should be make and receive calls.

With a Droid 2 and GV what could i do to make a receive calls from Afghanistan? There is some information about how to do this, but it is out of date.

@salviati: the voice plugin lets you call directly. does the plugin work with 3G?

So can you use this service (perhaps in conjunction with Google Voice) to call regular phone numbers without another VoIP app. It would be great if GV could work over the 3G network to place calls rather than the round-about way it works now by calling a Google phone number and re-directing.
Hopefully this would help with some of the lag I notice when receiving incoming calls. For example, when I’m sitting at my computer with Gmail open, I get a notification of an incoming call in the browser up to 10 seconds before my phone finally starts ringing. I can only assume that everyone who calls me thinks I take a long time to answer the phone, when in reality it is just a technical issue.

@williamthrilliam: That made little sense; I haven’t had my coffee yet this morning. What I want to do is use the native Google Voice app to call over VOIP, that would be sweet.
williamthrilliam
What really intrigues me is using if the Google Voice app will be updated to use VOIP over SIP standards.

“now we’re intrigued as to whether a free SIP client, like the SIPGate we used in our Google Voice setup, works in Android as well.”
that funny thing about standards is, the client cannot discriminate against anything, what happened to common sense with you guys.
