Japanese scientist unveils ‘RoboBot’ – a realistic pair of buttocks which responds to touch and displays ‘human emotions’ (…by clenching)

There is no doubting the life-like technology on display here is superb – if you can get over the sheer creepiness.

For this disembodied pair of buttocks displays some of the most realistic demonstrations of human emotions yet – all portrayed through the clenching or relaxing of a backside cheek.

There are some various uses for the technology, such as training massage therapists and proctologists without putting humans through any discomfort.

However inventor Nobuhiro Takahashim from the University of Electro-Communications in Japan, is more interested in the artistic and emotional side to his derrière, named Shiri, which ‘represents emotions with visual and tactual transformation of the muscles’.

He says his aim is the ‘approach the creation of sensitive and subtle expression by a humanoid robot using organic constructs’

The inventor certainly has form for pairing robots with emotion – he previously invented a machine for ‘communications within the mouth’, which could allow long-distance couples to passionately kiss over the internet.

He has also created a ‘huggable robot’ – which mirrors your own hugging motions, so that you can use the robot to give yourself a pat on the back.

The ‘robo-bot’, or ‘ro-butt’ contains a skin of silicone over a foam structure, under which lies ‘a gluteus maximum actuator’, or artificial muscles that be inflated or deflated to simulate different ‘moods’.

Also tucked away inside is an internal microphone, which detects when the cheeks are being touched, rubbed or slapped ad responds accordingly.

Among its many moves are twitching, clenching or protruding, and the results in the video are indeed realistic.

Despite the inherent creepiness of seeing disjointed buttocks responding to human touches, the projects shows just how close we are getting to realistic human-shaped robots, long a staple of science fiction.

Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight

Barnes & Noble unleashed its latest e-book reader. The Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight may appear very similar to its previous model, down to its insides, until you turn it on.

The device features a front-lit screen called GlowLight, producing a glow that is a bit different from the usual back-lit displays. GlowLight makes it easier for your eyes to read on the screen, although it cuts the battery life in half.

While the original Nook Simple Touch could last up to two months without charging, the newer version–if GlowLight is turned on–has a battery life of up to a month. The GlowLight can be toggled by pressing the Nook’s small N button on the bottom of the device.

The new ereader features a Texas Instruments CPU, 2GB of storage, and 7-inch E-Ink display, much like the No-Glowlight version.

The Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight is available for pre-order starting today at $ 139. The gadget is expected to ship and hit retail in May.

Logitech Touch Mouse M600 Coming This Month

They may not be the hottest gadget on the planet, but button-free mouses will unlikely be eliminated from the shelves soon. Why? Because using your mouse without buttons is the future!

Logitech even thinks so with the introduction of its take on the wireless touch mouse. The Logitech Touch Mouse M600 lets you navigate through a touch surface instead of clicking on boring buttons. It comes with Logitech’s Flow Scroll software that provides smooth scrolling similar to your touch screen smartphones. This mouse works for both right- and left-handed folks once settings are configured.

Additionally, this device comes with a tiny Logitech Unifying receiver, which can connect up to six compatible mouses and wireless keyboards in one USB port.

The Logitech Touch Mouse will be available in the United States and Europe within the month, with a suggested retail price of $ 69.99.
