Printing straight from your iPad without a separate app! That’s the allure of AirPrint, Apple’s wireless printing solution that does away with software and drivers. There are only a dozen printers it works with now, though. [Updated] More »

@seanpat12: Do you, though? There’s a second list of printers that will have this functionality with a firmware update, which implies to me that it doesn’t necessarily have to be new.

You can print to your existing printers that are connected to your network without an app. Look on lifehacker for an article relating to AirPrint. Tried to include the link but the spam filter wouldn’t allow it.

@traviscollins: Thanks for answering my separate question as soon as I submitted it!

You can print without and app now to any printer on your network.

@seanpat12: I agree… AirPrint is an AirFAIL.

Edit: Seems many enterprising individuals have worked it out independently. Shame on my dumb ass for not Googling before speaking.
I don’t have the depth of technical knowledge to intuit the answer to this question, so here goes: Would it be particularly difficult for Apple to open this up by integrating printing into iTunes such that as long as the non-wireless printer is plugged into an iTunes-running computer on the same wifi network as the iDevices one could take advantage of a faux AirPrint capability?

at first AirPrint got me excited. I can finally and easily print? Sign me up.
But I’m not buying a new printer and I wouldn’t buy any of these. They are much too small and wouldn’t last at my house.
Let me know when enterprise printers like my 4050 or LJ5 get support.

@im2fools: I buy them in bulk at Sam’s Club.

Shouldn’t any wireless printer be able to work? What’s special about these printers over other models? For instance, I have an HP Photosmart C4700 series.

@seanpat12: Yes, but I do need more ink, so I might as well buy a printer.

I picked up the D110 from Amazon for $60- not a bad price at all. It came yesterday and I’ve been impressed so far. I’ve printed from two iPhones so far- but no iPads. Once the printer was connected to my wifi network (which you do straight from the printer, no computer needed for setup), the iPhones printed to it with ease. I wish I could say the same for my wife’s Vista laptop.

or you can just download “airprint enabler” and have 100% support for all printers.

ALL HP……?

It is ridiculous that you must buy another wireless printer just for this feature to work.
seanpat12
Air Print Hacktivator enables sharing any printer via an OSX 10.6.5 machine.
