A cushion made by Rose West and Myra Hindley’s nightie: The Black Widow’s macabre collection of murder-abilia goes on display at crime museum

By Emily Allen

|

She’s a notorious gangster’s moll and every man who’s fallen for her has ended up dead or in jail.

But now Linda Calvey, the woman better known as the Black Widow, has donated some of her possessions she accumulated behind bars to a privately owned crime museum.

The collection, which include items given to her by Myra Hindley and Rose West, went on display at the Crime Through Time Museum at Littledean Jail, Gloucestershire, this week.

Accumulated during the 21-year period she spent behind bars, the collection includes a Christmas card, box of chocolates, cardigan and nighty given to her by Myra Hindley during their time in High Point Prison, Suffolk.

Another disturbing item includes a cushion made by Rose West that Calvey purchased in Durham Prison in 1994.

Museum curator, Andy Jones, 50, explained Calvey’s personal connection to these items, and the evil killers they had once belonged to.

Mr Jones said: ‘Clothes such as the kaftan and cardigan provide an insight into how Hindley dressed in her final years that will not have been seen before.

‘Hindley also gave Linda Christmas cards each year with a personal message in each one. There is a heart-shaped box from Hindley, which strangely didn’t include anything inside.

‘Rose West’s cushion was bought by Linda. It was on sale in the prison shop, but Rose West didn’t receive the money herself as this was against prison policy.

‘All the money went back into the prison service.’

Calvey was jailed for killing her lover, Ronnie Cook with a shot gun in 1990, serving 18-and-a-half years for the murder, which she still denies committing.

She had previously served three years for armed robbery.

The Black Widow insisted she only turned to serious crime after her first husband Mickey Calvey, was shot dead by the Flying Squad during a raid on a supermarket in 1978.

The armed robberies she took part in earned her a reputed £1million.

Calvey met her next lover, gangster Cook, when the East End underworld threw her a ‘benefits’ party after Mickey’s death.

When Cook himself was jailed for 16 years in 1981 for an £800,000 security van robbery, Calvey claimed he had told her he would understand if she had affairs while he was inside – so long as she did not ‘flaunt it’.

His release in 1990 led to his, and Calvey’s, untimely demise.

Calvey’s special position as prison hairdresser, meant that she was forced to spend time with the most dangerous of prisoners, even those such as Hindley and West who were normally forbidden contact with other prisoners.

‘Linda Calvey’s first impression of Hindley was that she was cold and evil, she could sense this from the start,’ said Mr Jones.

‘One prison governor always advised Linda to switch off when the worst prisoners spoke of their crimes.

‘This was to protect Linda’s own sanity. So she held on to that advice throughout her prison life. Yet Linda was one of the very few inmate Hindley met during her prison term.

‘Hindley always tried to get close to Linda Calvey, but because of her heinous crimes Linda could never accept that.

‘Linda tolerated Hindley, but her view is that no sane person would be friends her or any other child killer.

‘She felt she had been imprisoned with a monster and had no choice but to tolerate her presence.’

As well as items from the two female serial killers, Calvey also donated her own items from her time in prison, including cutlery with her name engraved, her passport at the time she was imprisoned and her wedding dress.

‘The Myra Hindley and Rose West items were all personal possessions from Linda Calvey’s cell during her time in prison,’ said Mr Jones.

‘She wanted to get rid of the Myra Hindley items even though they were gifted to her.

‘It’s only in recent months that she was having a clear out that she noticed the items, and she was horrified they were still in her possession.

‘Linda decided to get rid of them by giving them to an acquaintance who in turn gifted them to the museum.’

Calvey, who was released in 2008, categorically denies killing Cook and receiving £1 million from her robberies.

‘Linda strongly felt she was imprisoned unfairly for a crime she claims she didn’t commit,’ said Mr Jones.

Notorious: The collection includes items given to her by serial killers Myra Hindley, left, and Rose West, right

‘She has always put her hands up to previous crimes she’s committed, and if she had murdered her lover she would have had no problem serving the time the full 18 years she was given.

‘She was offered a reduced prison term of seven years by the Home Office if she admitted the murder.

‘But she could not accept that on a point of principle because of her innocence – instead she stubbornly chose to do the full 18-year prison term.

‘The conditions were very tough and she liked to help a lot of the younger female inmates settle down in what was a very hard environment for any inmate.’

Mr Jones’s museum is unique as Britain’s only true crime and murder-abillia collection that is open to the public.

The only comparable collection is the Black Museum in New Scotland Yard, which is only open to authorised police and government staff and considerably smaller than Littledean Jail.

‘We are very politically incorrect here,’ said Mr Jones.

‘There is a great deal of disturbing and graphic exhibit material here including items from British and American serial killers, the hangman’s noose used on the failed attempt to execute John ‘Babbacombe’ Lee, Nazi Holocaust and death camp uniforms, The Krays, Freaks of Nature, to Amy Winehouse and Russell Brand,’ said Mr Jones.

‘Our building is a former-Victorian house of jail and correction and the perfect location to show our exhibits.

‘But many of our collections are very taboo so we take great care in advising visitors who are easily offended or are of a sensitive nature are warned to avoid Littledean Jail.

‘True crime, sleaze and scandal are sensitive and unpleasant subject to cover and as such are not presented here in a pleasant manner.’

Three years ago this week, Calvey married her latest husband, 79-year-old businessman George Ceasar. The couple remain happily married.

Is racism damaging Sentamu’s chances of leading the church? Black archbishop ‘is facing offensive smear campaign’

By Steve Doughty

Dr John Sentamu: Not a favourite of the liberal wing

The Church of England was plunged into a race row yesterday over the choice of the next Archbishop of Canterbury.

A leading supporter of the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, who is one of the favourites for the job, said his name had been ‘besmirched’ by opponents who had resorted to ‘naked racism’.

The allegation was levelled by the Reverend Arun Arora, a former member of Dr Sentamu’s staff, who is set to take up a prominent post in the Church’s national bureaucracy this summer.

The high-level charge that an anonymous and offensive smear campaign is under way against Dr Sentamu, the CofE’s first black archbishop, was made as various hostile comments said to have been made about him by leading churchmen were widely circulated.

The remarks said to have been made included references to the Archbishop’s supposedly ‘quite tribal’ behaviour’ ‘the African chief thing’, and ‘his African views and approach’.

Dr Sentamu, who is currently number two in the Church hierarchy, declined to comment on the allegations yesterday.

An aide said: ‘He would like to make it clear that he has never experienced  racist views from within the Church – and no one within the Church has made such comments to him publicly or privately before.’

The allegations mean that the race to succeed Dr Rowan Williams as leader of the CofE and the worldwide Anglican Communion has descended into harsh abuse in little more than a month.

Dr Sentamu, who was born in Uganda, was an early favourite to go to Lambeth Palace, with his chances thought to be strong thanks to his popular touch and ability to command an audience for Christian views.

But he has since slipped back in the betting as the perception has grown that a number of senior Church insiders see him as an outsider and would prefer a safer candidate.

Mr Arora, a former lawyer who was Dr Sentamu’s media spokesman for four years until 2009, made his views known in a blog published by the churches in Wolverhampton, where he is working as a priest.

He said that while other candidates for Lambeth Palace were being discussed in terms of their opinions and alliances, ‘it is only when Sentamu is mentioned that such considerations give way to explicit criticism – some of it attributable, much of it anonymous whispering, but all of it in stark contrast to the way other bishops are being portrayed’.

Mr Arora said some of the criticism has been ‘disturbing’, citing the supposed description of 62-year-old Dr Sentamu by one Oxford don as ‘brutish’.

Mr Arora said the use of the word was racist and added: ‘At its best the besmirching of John Sentamu has revealed that strand of snobbery which views outsiders as lacking class, diplomacy or civility – in other words not one of us.

‘At worst it has elicited the naked racism which still bubbles under the surface in our society, and which is exposed when a black man is in line to break the chains of history.’

Mr Arora, who is about to become the Church’s director of communications, ridiculed suggestions  that Dr Sentamu sometimes loses his temper.

The row comes at a time when various lobbies inside the CofE are competing to get their own champion into Lambeth Palace. Gay activists are hoping to find a figure potentially sympathetic to the cause of gay equality, while the liberal wing of the Church is anxious to maintain its own dominance over major appointments.

Two of the last three Archbishops of Canterbury have been prominent liberals, and one of the current favourites, the Bishop of Norwich, the Right Reverend Graham James, was a member of the staff of one of them, the late Lord Runcie.

Dr Sentamu is not a favourite of CofE liberals, who do not like his firm line against gay marriage and his generally socially conservative stance. Nor do they like his opposition to the Left-wing doctrine of multiculturalism, his championing of the virtues of Englishness, or his defence of the record of the British Empire.

Dr Williams, 61, announced last month that he was standing down as Archbishop of Canterbury, after ten years in the post.

He is to take up the role of Master of Magdalene College at Cambridge. His successor is expected to be named in late summer.

What’s black and white and all over the place? Satellite survey finds DOUBLE the number of penguins scientists expected

By Tamara Cohen

|

The first census of penguins at the South Pole has found nearly 600,000 – twice the number previously thought to be there.

Using state-of-the-art satellite imagery, scientists found 44 colonies of emperor penguins.

Seven colonies were previously unknown, and many of the known ones were bigger than expected.

In the past, it was notoriously difficult to estimate their numbers as they live in temperatures of -50c (-58f), and some colonies are in the most remote parts of the Antarctic sea ice.

The British Antarctic Survey hopes that having an accurate number – thought to be 595,000 compared with previous estimates of 270,000-350,000 – will help manage conservation and track climate change.

The scientists hope having an accurate measure of their number – now though to be 595,000 compared to previous estimates of 270,000-350,000 – will help manage conservation efforts and track the impact of climate change.

Emperors are the largest penguins, and live in the coldest and most remote locations. Other Antarctic penguins live further north. They have gold patches on their ears and tops of their chests.

Living in large colonies, they are the only penguin species to breed through the pitch-dark Antarctic winter in brutal temperatures and winds of more than 120 miles an hour.

Counting emperor penguins in their icy Antarctic habitat was not easy until researchers used new technology to map the birds from space

They mate in April and in around June, the females lay a single egg and pass it to the male who will balance it on their feet, under their ‘coat’ of skin and feather which keeps it warm for the next two months.

The mothers then go out to sea to feed and return in August – the height of the winter – when the chicks are due to hatch. Males then trundle off for up to 50 miles to find food and return to help rear the chick.

This mapping technique is said to be an ‘enormous step forward’ as it allows counting of penguins safely, cheaply and without disrupting their environment. It could be used to measure other remote creatures.

Scientists are concerned that in some regions of Antarctica, earlier springs are causing a loss of sea ice for emperor penguins in the north of the continent, while the south is far less affected.

Lead author and geographer Peter Fretwell said of the three-year study: ‘We are delighted to be able to locate and identify such a large number of emperor penguins. This is the first comprehensive census of a species taken from space, and it is non-invasive and far more accurate than attempts to count them on the ground.

‘We expect to lose as many as half of the penguins in the next 60 years, because they breed on the sea ice. This will have knock on effects for killer whiles and leopard seals which prey on them.

‘But we believe climate change is going to be regional and uneven in its effects, with loss of sea ice in the west of the continent where a lot of the emperors are, but gains in more southerly area.

‘This will help us understand the impact on the penguins and where to focus efforts on research and conservation.’

The pictures, taken during the 2009 breeding season, are published today (Sat) in the journal PLoS ONE.
