Reasons to be cheerful: The idea has been devised in an attempt to fulfil David Cameron’s aim of working out how happy the nation is

Tens of thousands of Britons could be asked by the state to record how they spend every hour of the day.

They will be pressed to keep ‘time diaries’ detailing exactly what they eat, how much exercise they take and even how long they sleep for.

The idea – which would cost taxpayers £1.5million – has been devised in an attempt to fulfil David Cameron’s aim of working out how happy the nation is.

Under the scheme, researchers would monitor when we are doing ‘positive’ things like walking a dog or cycling to work, as opposed to carrying out ‘negative behaviours’ such as watching television or sleeping.

Critics have condemned the proposals, published yesterday by the Office for National Statistics and devised by Professor Jonathan Gershuny of Oxford University, as ‘intrusive’.

So far efforts to pursue the Prime Minister’s aims have yielded mixed results, at a cost of £2million a year to taxpayers.

The most recent report came to the unsurprising conclusion that Britons worried about schools, hospitals, their jobs and their families, but less about climate change.
