Murder inquiry: Jennie Leeman was found shot dead after what police believe was a ‘domestic-related incident’
Neighbours today paid tribute to a woman whose husband is thought to have been arrested on suspicion of her murder.
Friends of Jennie Leeman, 44, described her as ‘a lovely lady’ who was ‘very pretty’ and well-liked in the village of Parracombe, north Devon.
They revealed that Jennie and David, 59, had experienced problems in their marriage but were very private about the relationship.
A retired couple, who live nearby but did not wish to be named, described mum-of-four Jennie’s death as a ‘tragedy’.
One neighbour, in her 70s, said: ‘Jennie was a lovely lady and this has hit the whole village very hard.
‘She was absolutely devoted to her four children and loved them with all hear heart.
‘Her eldest, William, is about 17 and the youngest Isabella is about six so I can only imagine how difficult it has been for them.’
She added: ‘There were rumours that she had become depressed after losing her father last year.
‘People also said there were troubles in the marriage but she was quite private about that type of thing.’
Police confirmed the 44-year-old was found dead following a ‘domestic-related incident’ at the farmhouse.
Children playing nearby ran to a neighbour pleading for help but by the time police and ambulances reached the scene Mrs Leeman had died of her wounds.
Armed police and a helicopter arrived at a property near Parracombe at around 5.40pm yesterday.
Police say the man they arrested gave himself up. He is not believed to have been armed when approached.
Mrs Leeman’s children – three of whom are of school age – were being comforted by family liaison officers while arrangements were made for them to stay in a place of safety. It is unclear whether any of them witnessed the shooting.
The couple ran a country cottage holiday letting business called Devonshire Cottage Holidays under the company names of Leeman UK Ltd and Leeman Holdings UK Ltd.
According to neighbours, a number of people on quad bikes had been using shotguns in the area during the afternoon.
The house stands at the edge of a heavily-wooded valley less than a mile from the Bristol Channel.
Investigation: Police arrested a man, thought to be Mrs Leeman’s husband, at the farmhouse near Parracombe in north Devon
One neighbour said: ‘You just feel so desperately sorry for those children and pray they didn’t see what happened.’
A police spokesman said: ‘On arrival we found the body of a woman in her 40s in the grounds of the property. She had sustained apparent gunshot wounds.
‘A man in his 50s has been arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder. We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.’
